Art for Human rights
On September 2, 2023 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a special art exhibition, Art For Human Rights, was held. This is a continuation of a similar event held in Boston on March 11th of this year. The organizers of the event, KaiChau Matthew Kung and Yage Grace Teng, hoped to raise awareness of the situation of democracy and human rights in China, especially prisoners of conscience, and to donate the proceeds from the sale of their works to human rights organizations.
The total amount of money raised from the sale of works and donations for this exhibition is US$10,042, which, together with the proceeds from the previous exhibition, makes a total of US$12,054. Donations have been made to three human rights organizations in the following amounts: Institute For China’s Democratic Transition(IFCDT): US$8,006, Chinese Human Rights Defenders(CHRD): US$3,042; Humanitarian China, $1006. Founded in 2017, the IFCDT aims to promote the editing of magazines, online courses and knowledge dissemination on China’s democratization. The CHRD aims to help civil society in mainland China develop civil society, promote legal reforms through democratic means, follow universal human rights standards and defend the rights of citizens as stipulated in China’s constitution, and monitor the government’s implementation of its commitments to safeguard human rights. Since its establishment in 2007, Humanitarian China has provided humanitarian assistance to political prisoners, prisoners of conscience, and their families in China, with more than 1,300 beneficiaries. The three organizations expressed their deep gratitude to the event organizers, the art creators, purchasers, and the donors.
The paintings, photographs, sculptures, and installations on display came from high school students in Boston, New Jersey, and New York – Yage Grace Teng, KaiChau Matthew Kung, Yacheng Nancy Teng, KaiTong Paul Kung, Anna Kung, Bella Gao, and Oleh Lahoda. They are honored that the sale of their work has contributed to humanitarian causes. The organizers said that they will organize similar events in more places in the future to attract more artists who care about art as well as democracy and human rights.
